Highway

Driving on the highway always leaves a strong impression on me. This is what prompted this project to appear.

It is about the interaction and perception of the highway by the driver. All the photos were taken from the car, through the windshield.

The project is a visual story about:

  • a different state of the driver in the highway environment,
  • the special aesthetics of its space,
  • the emotional perception that arises when you are on it.

Most of the photos were taken on highways in the city of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in southern China.

The highway, from here on out, is a special space that combines:

  • Only high Speed of movement,
  • The height of the structure, detachment from the ground,
  • Accessibility only for motor vehicles, no access for people or animals,
  • The ability to navigate mainly by GPS navigator.

The project was filmed in the spring and summer of 2025. Most of the roads on which the filming took place were built after 2020.

This project is my documentary, emotional and artistic evidence of the rapid emergence of a new phenomenon in the space of society and human habitation – a mass highway. The city, Zhuhai, scattered between islands and divided by river deltas, suddenly found itself connected by a system of roads without traffic jams. Areas remote from the city center became accessible within 15-30 minutes. This resembles the emergence of mobile communications, but for movement in space.

I was almost mentally destroyed by the beginning of the war in Ukraine. For 3 years I could not take photographs. When I was on the street, I imagined pictures of destroyed houses. I did not appear in crowded places, because shame did not allow me to look people in the eyes.

This project is my rebirth and evidence of how important it is to preserve peace, how many beautiful things are created by people’s labor.
